The Channel Islands are a meeting point where British and French cultural influences – Normandy in particular – collide and mingle. This book/CD shows you the songs, music and other oral traditions which form a cultural heritage as rich and varied as it is littleknown. Either in french, english or island languages, between seafring ballads, love songs, heel and toe polkas, stories, come and discover island’s hidden charm !

This book is the first compilation from Channel Island’s recordings collections of traditional songs and musics.
As a result of a long work, it’s an important part of a big research and development project performed by La Loure and University of Caen with Guernsey Museum, Société Jersiaise, Jersey Heritage…

The recordings belongs to several fieldworks (by BBC in 1938, 1957 et 1960, by Musée national des arts et traditions populaires in 1970, by local inquiries after). They are the reflect of Channel Islands’ melting pot : one can listen songs in either english, french or island languages. Represent also instrumental airs of dance as well as other oral traditions there (narratives of life, riddle, history).
