There are a substantial number of customs and traditions which continue to thrive in Britain, one of which is the longsword tradition. Once mainly found in Yorkshire and North East England, longsword is now performed throughout the country. Contrary to popular belief, this dance form bears no relationship to the Scottish sword dance. It involves a team of six or eight performers, linked together with wooden or metal swords, who weave and twist to create many varied shapes while circling in a hypnotic manner. Three dances are described in the book. In addition to instructions for the dance moves, it also includes diagrams, photographs interesting background information and a useful number of asides which help the dance teacher to understand and master some of the more involved movements. In the past, the traditional way to learn was by watching and copying experienced dancers but since this method is not always available today, this book provides an alternative form of teaching resource for the newcomer to the tradition.
