Sheffield Carols Book

Sheffield Carols Book

The fifty carols presented in this new edition are part of an active traditional repertoire that is performed in pubs, as well as chapels, churches, homes, and in the open air, in villages to the north-west of Sheffield. With its roots in eighteenth-century English vernacular musical life, it is a tradition of carolling that largely predates the predominant Victorian conception.

Popular Irish Songs

Popular Irish Songs

The songs of Ireland enjoy popularity far beyond the shores of the Emerald Isle. Rich with melody, sentiment, and lively spirit, they warm the hearts and lift the spirits of all who sing them. Here is a collection of the best of those songs, including the most popular Irish-American songs from the turn of the century.Several of the songs are from Thomas Moore's Irish Melodies, including "'Tis the Last Rose of Summer," "The Minstrel Boy," and "Believe Me, If All Those Endearing Young Charms." Patriotic songs like "The Wearing of the Green" and comic songs such as "Who Threw the Overalls in Mistress Murphy's Chowder" are included, along with such popular favorites as "Danny Boy," "My Wild Irish Rose," "Sweet Rosie O'Grady" and "When Irish Eyes Are Smiling."This treasury of 36 songs will add a true touch of Irish spirit to St. Patrick's Day gatherings and every kind of songfest where singers gather to share songs of universal appeal. They are reprinted here in piano arrangements with complete lyrics, most of them with their original sheet-music covers. A new Introduction includes background notes on the history of each of these memorable songs.

Freedom Fields (Seth Lakeman)

Freedom Fields (Seth Lakeman)

Price: 16.95

Freedom Fields takes its name from a skirmish which took place on 3rd December 1643, where after vicious fighting the Roundhead Garrison of Plymouth made their final rally, routed the King’s army (the Cavaliers) and this uprising changed the course of English history. The album contains a compelling array of songs inspired by the West Country and explores the turmoil of conflict, war and freedom. Several songs are about the area’s naval traditions, Lady Of The Sea, while King & Country along with the title track further examines the factions created by the English Civil War.

Meanwhile, the world above and below ground is recorded in The Colliers which takes its theme from the oppression of the tin and copper miners. What lifts this album from out of the more usual stock of folk inspired material is Lakeman’s musical dexterity and energy, the passion and intensity of his delivery, how he skilfully and sympathetically applies historical experience to universal truths about the human condition. Freedom Fields is availble here in sheet music format arranged for Guitar Tab and Vocals.
